The High-Ticket Trust Triangle
Why Some Experts Can Charge 10x More Than Others
The biggest mistake service providers make isn't undercharging. It's thinking that the solution is simply to raise their rates, and then struggling to sell their high-priced offers.
I see this all the time in my coaching and consulting sessions. Someone is struggling to hit their income goals, and the internet gurus tell them "just charge more".
While there's nothing wrong with raising your rates, doing it without the right foundation is like building a house on sand. It might work temporarily, but it won't last.
After working with several entrepreneurs in different industries and studying those who successfully command premium rates, I've noticed a clear pattern:
Those who consistently charge premium rates have three key elements working in perfect harmony. Let’s break it down:
Building authority isn't about having the most credentials or the biggest following. It's about owning a specific space in your market and being known for it.
Most service providers try to compete on expertise alone. They list their certifications, years of experience, and client results. While these are important, they're not enough to command premium rates.
There are thousands of qualified coaches, consultants, and service providers. Why should someone pay you 10x more than the others?
The answer lies in how you position your expertise.
Instead of trying to be the best in an existing category, create your own category. This is how you differentiate yourself and become irreplaceable.
For example: Instead of saying you’re a marketing agency for Direct-to-Consumer brands, try this: "We help DTC brands increase repeat purchases and customer loyalty with personalised email flows and post-purchase campaigns — without spending more on ads.”
Why this positioning works:
Target market: Direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands.
Clear outcome: More repeat purchases and increased customer loyalty.
Unique approach: Using personalised email flows and post-purchase campaigns, a practical, scalable alternative to ad-based growth.
Value Proposition: By focusing on maximising the value of your existing customers, we help you grow profitability sustainably while reducing your dependence on rising ad costs.
This level of specificity immediately sets you apart and makes price comparison irrelevant. It also helps you create marketing messaging that sticks.
2. Results Roadmap
This is where most service providers fall short. They focus on listing features and capabilities instead of mapping out exactly how they'll deliver results.
The higher your prices, the more precise your roadmap needs to be.
This goes beyond sharing testimonials or case studies. While social proof is important, it's just one piece of the puzzle.
Your results roadmap needs three key components:
Clear milestones
Your prospects need to see exactly what results they'll achieve and when. The clearer the path to their desired outcome, the more confidence they'll have in your solution.
Risk mitigation
The bigger the investment, the more you need to address potential obstacles upfront. Show them how you've already solved the challenges they're worried about.
Quick wins
Map out the specific results they'll achieve in the first few weeks. Early success builds confidence and momentum.
The key is to make your roadmap so clear and your results so predictable that high fees feel like a smart investment rather than a risky bet.
3. Personal Connection
Here's where most advice about building rapport and connection falls short:
Surface-level relationships can help you sell lower-priced services, but premium rates require a higher level of trust and profound alignment between you and your ideal clients.
This isn't about being friends with your clients. It's about:
Understanding their deeper motivations
Addressing their unspoken fears
Sharing their values and vision
Aligning with their worldview
Speaking their language
When you achieve this level of connection with your prospects, price becomes secondary to the value of the relationship.
The Multiplier Effect
Here's what makes the High-Ticket Trust Triangle so powerful: these elements create a compounding effect and multiply each other's impact.
Most service providers have one or two elements in place. But having all three creates an exponential effect:
Authority Positioning makes people notice you
Results Roadmap makes them trust you as an expert
Personal Connection makes them choose you over anyone else
Missing even one element puts a cap on your rates. But when all three align, pricing resistance practically disappears.
Putting It Into Practice
Start by assessing where you stand with each element:
Authority Positioning:
Have you carved out a unique space in your market?
Can prospects immediately understand what makes you different?
Does your positioning make price comparison irrelevant?
Results Roadmap:
Is your methodology clearly defined?
Have you addressed potential obstacles?
Do you have a system for delivering early wins?
Personal Connection:
Do you truly understand your ideal clients?
Does your message resonate on a deeper level?
Are you attracting clients who share your values?
Focus on strengthening your weakest element first. That's where you'll see the biggest impact on your ability to command premium rates.
Remember, charging premium rates isn't about convincing people to pay more. It's about creating so much value and trust that you become the obvious choice and your rates become a secondary consideration.
